Below are guidance documents and teaching materials to support schools in working with EAL learners. Select the relevant category from the dropdown menu to view the materials for each.

Reading

  • The reading grids uploaded under the reading section of the menu were devised by Reading Borough Council Equality Services. Teach/ translate the question words before reading and ask children to complete the grid after reading. (Children who are literate in their first language could write in their first language).
  • Reciprocal Teaching is a way of structuring guided reading sessions. The documents labelled as such were created by Reading Borough Council Equality Services.
  • Young Teachers are children who have been trained to support their peers with reading. The documents labelled "Young Teachers" were created by Reading Borough Council Equality Services.
