Supporting People of Colour pupils, parents and staff
This course is to enable teachers to develop their support approaches for children, parents and staff of colour. The resources and activities explored will:
• Improve a school’s understanding of the lived experiences of parents, children
and staff of colour
• Enable staff to support children to develop positive identities and navigate
challenges
• Enable staff to help parents to better understand school settings and ways to
support their children
• Support staff of colour to navigate their role and school experiences
• Support schools to develop ongoing relationships of trust and collaboration
with parents, pupils and staff of colour
Who should attend
Ideally two members of staff from each participating school, one of whom is a person of colour member of staff.
Participants must have attended the Racial Literacy course before attending this course.
Course outcomes
Participants will have an improved understanding of the lived experiences of parents, children and staff of colour. They will be better able to:
- support children to develop positive identities and navigate challenges
- help parents to better understand school settings and ways to support their children
- support staff of colour to navigate their role and school experiences
- develop ongoing relationships of trust and collaboration with parents, pupils and staff of colour
