A one-day course to assist site controllers/caretakers/handypersons etc. to understand their health and safety responsibilities and manage the risks associated with their activities.

Who should attend

School Site Controllers, Caretakers, Building Handypersons and others with building-related responsibilities. The course is suitable as induction training for those new to the role or as a refresher for those who have attended previous training. It is advised that refresher training is undertaken every three years.

Course outcomes

  •  understanding of the importance of implementing and maintaining safe working practices
  •  an overview of the requirement for risk assessment and principles of risk management
  • awareness of good practice in lone working
  • approach and techniques to adopt to protect health and safety in manual handling
  • competence in changing lamps, bulbs etc and visual checking of cable use and storage of hazardous substances
  •  awareness of key arrangements for maintenance of buildings/equipment/services and record keeping
  • selection/control of contractors and use of permits to work
  • risks associated with asbestos
  • fire prevention and management
